Moi University Students’ Organisation (MUSO) elections have officially begun in Main Campus Eldoret.
In a Kamkunji held today at the famous ‘Frustration’ Square, outside the Students’ Centre, the Chairman to the Students’ Electoral Commission-SEC- Mr. Salim Cheserem officially opened campaigns and urged comrades to carry out peaceful and civilised politics.
The notable members of the outgoing 28th Students Governing Council who were present were Mr Kenga (Finance), Papa (Sports), and Mr. Gogo (Academics).
Comrades couldn’t hide their joy and gratitude to the outgoing Directors especially to Edwin Gogo as they chanted his name in appreciation for his wonderful job. Some of them also chanted Papa’s name.
Unfortunately, some group of students tried to disrupt the event by throwing stones at those who attended the ceremony. The incident never lasted as the goons later were chased by the angry students who responded in retaliation. The student security from SEC could only watch as the two opposing sides hurled stones at each other.
Of interest too is the unporpularity of the SEC members this time round. The previous Commissions have enjoyed wide support from the students but this year things are different. They could not charge the crowd as their ‘Comrades Power!’ Chants went unanswered.
Unlike other universities’ elections which have been marred with scenes of violence, Moi University elections have generally been peaceful and without scenes of serious violence.
The battle lines have been drawn in various dockets like The Chairperson’s and Secretary General’s posts. Two political heavy-weight ; Mr Don Mtetezi Owino and Elvis Langas are going head to head for the Chairperson’s seat. Oliver Bill and Alex Alex will also face each other at the ballot for the Sec Gen’s docket.
The writer takes this opportunity to wish all the aspirants a peaceful and democratic elections and may the best candidate win.
